The History of Knipex: A Traditional Company in Transition

The Beginnings in Wuppertal-Cronenberg

In 1882, Carl Gustav Putsch laid the foundation for Knipex by opening a small forge in the basement of his house in Wuppertal-Cronenberg. There, he began producing pliers. The company’s growth led to the construction of a separate forge in 1900 and the hiring of seven employees in the following years.

The Development of the Knipex Brand

Carl Putsch Jr., son of the founder, played a key role in the company’s development. He shaped the Knipex brand and officially registered it in 1942. Under his leadership – and later that of his own son from 1954 onward – Knipex established itself as a market leader in Europe.
