What Does ESD Mean in Safety Shoes?

Many manufacturers offer customers safety shoes with the addition of ESD. But many wonder what ESD actually means.

ESD Safety Shoes (ESD = electrostatic discharge) have a lower electrical resistance of 0.1 to 100 MΩ. Wearing ESD shoes prevents the build-up of static electricity.

Antistatic or ESD Safety Shoes - What is the Difference?

Both antistatic shoes and ESD safety shoes are conductive shoes. They protect electrical devices by conducting electrical energy to the ground and preventing static shocks, voltages, and sparks. Conductive safety shoes are worn in industries where static electricity is a problem or can cause fires or explosions. However, they are not the same as insulating safety shoes, which prevent a circuit from closing with the ground.

ESD and antistatic protection are often confused, but not only when it comes to protective shoes. While one implies the other, it does not mean the reverse. Both terms refer to contact resistance, but there is an important difference between them.

The electrical resistance of antistatic protective shoes is between 0.1 and 1000 megohms (MΩ). Antistatic protective shoes allow the static electricity that builds up in the body to flow to the ground and prevent sudden discharges through contact with charged objects.

ESD protective shoes (ESD = electrostatic discharge), on the other hand, have an even lower electrical resistance of 0.1 to 100 MΩ. Wearing ESD shoes prevents the build-up of static electricity in the body by discharging the charge to the ground in a very safe and controlled manner. They are designed to protect charged objects from sudden discharges when they come into contact with each other.
